Following the Money: An Introduction to Anti-Money Laundering

🧠 Webinar Overview

Money laundering is a major challenge for financial institutions, businesses, regulators, and economies worldwide. As financial transactions become increasingly digital and interconnected, understanding how illicit funds move through the financial system has become essential for students, finance professionals, researchers, and aspiring banking and compliance professionals.

This interactive webinar introduces participants to the fundamentals of Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and explores how suspicious financial activities can be identified, assessed, and investigated. Through practical examples, real-world scenarios, and interactive activities, participants will learn how to follow the movement of money, recognize potential red flags, understand customer due diligence, and distinguish unusual transactions from genuine evidence of wrongdoing.

The session will also explore key concepts such as Know Your Customer (KYC), Customer Due Diligence (CDD), Enhanced Due Diligence (EDD), Source of Funds, Source of Wealth, Ultimate Beneficial Ownership (UBO), Politically Exposed Persons (PEPs), and Suspicious Transaction Reports (STRs).

By connecting financial concepts with practical investigative thinking, this session aims to develop greater awareness of financial crime prevention, regulatory compliance, and responsible financial decision-making.

  • Why KYC goes beyond collecting documents and involves understanding customer identity and behaviour.

  • How CDD and EDD help assess customer risk and support appropriate due diligence.

  • The difference between Source of Funds and Source of Wealth.

  • How to recognize potential AML red flags without automatically assuming criminal activity.

  • How complex ownership structures can conceal the Ultimate Beneficial Owner.
